Shipping Address as Attack Surface
Here’s something I never considered until my fraud incident: your shipping address can be used against you. When I reverse-searched the address used for that fraudulent MacBook purchase, I found it was a real Amazon Locker location. The scammers intended to pick it up before they were caught.
Now I treat my shipping address like a password:
- For one-off purchases from unknown sites: I use a PO Box or a UPS Store mailbox. The USPS website charges about $60 for 6 months of a small PO Box at most locations.

If a site relies on client-side JavaScript to process payments, any injected malicious script can steal card details directly from the browser. I look for sites that process payments server-side or use a dedicated payment gateway like Stripe or Shopify Payments.
The Honest Limitations of These Methods
I need to be upfront: none of this is foolproof. Here are the limitations I’ve discovered:
- Virtual cards don’t work everywhere. About 5% of merchants in my testing rejected Privacy.com cards, usually because their payment processor flagged it as a prepaid card.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: every time you buy something online, you’re trusting a system that was not designed with security as its primary goal. The e-commerce infrastructure we use today was built for convenience, with security added as an afterthought.
The tools I’ve described — virtual cards, dedicated browser profiles, password managers, transaction alerts — aren’t paranoia. They’re necessary adaptations to a reality where data breaches happen weekly.
