10 Best Privacy-Focused Search Engines in 2024: I Took Them All for a Spin

The issue: Brave Search’s index is still building. Who it’s for: Parents with young children sharing a computer. People who want a no-configuration safe search that also protects privacy. Not ideal for power users, researchers, or anyone searching for health, news, or controversial topics.

Response time: Average 1.1 seconds. A bit slow, but acceptable.

8. Qwant: European Privacy with a Visual Twist

Qwant is a French search engine that processes both its own index and Bing’s results. It’s been around since 2013 and is one of the most popular private search engines in Europe.

What stood out: Qwant’s interface is genuinely pleasant. Search results are split into tabs — Web, News, Images, Social — with a clean, modern design. Why it’s here: Yippy doesn’t track users, doesn’t store search history, and doesn’t serve personalized ads. Its main selling point is the cluster view, which helps you explore a topic without the Google-style “best result at the top” assumption.

For a query like “CSS Grid layout examples,” Yippy clustered results into groups: “Tutorials,” “Documentation,” “Code Snippets,” and “Tools.” It’s genuinely useful for exploratory research.

The downside: Yippy’s index is small and feels dated. Many results were from 2022 or earlier. The UI is functional but ugly. It’s a tool for specific use cases, not a daily driver.

How I Chose My Daily Driver

After six weeks of testing, I settled on two engines for daily use, each for different contexts.

Law enforcement requests can compel cooperation.
