Best Search Engines for Privacy-Conscious Users: I Tested 8 Options for 30 Days

Last year, I logged into my Google account to grab an old email and noticed something unsettling in my Search activity. Over 18 months, Google had recorded 14,732 individual searches — including queries I’d made at 3 AM about “itchy rash after eating shrimp” and a deeply embarrassing one about “how to remove permanent marker from cat fur” (the cat was fine, the couch wasn’t).

Here’s the key insight: the number of third-party requests is a direct indicator of tracking. Every request to an analytics domain, an ad server, or a content network is a potential privacy leak. Google’s 347 requests include connections to google-analytics.com, doubleclick.net, googlesyndication.com, and about 40 other domains I didn’t recognize.

DuckDuckGo: The Privacy Veteran That’s Becoming Mainstream

I started with DuckDuckGo because it’s the name everyone knows. I’ve been using it on and off since 2015, and it’s come a long way.

The good: The !bang shortcuts are genuinely useful. Typing !w quantum computing takes me straight to Wikipedia. !a chair goes to Amazon. !walmart is self-explanatory. After 30 days, I’ve memorized about 40 of these, and they’ve replaced my browser bookmarks for many sites. Result quality for general queries is solid. When I searched for “Python async await best practices 2026,” I got relevant blog posts, Stack Overflow threads, and official Python docs—all within the first page. I only had one truly bad result where a query about “local plumbers Austin TX” returned results from Houston.

The privacy promise: DuckDuckGo famously says it doesn’t store personal information and doesn’t track you. Their privacy policy states they don’t collect or share your search history. However, there’s a nuance: they do route some ads through Microsoft’s ad network, and in 2022, researchers found that Microsoft’s Bing was able to track some DuckDuckGo search traffic. DuckDuckGo updated their policy after that.

The reality check: In my network tests, DuckDuckGo made connections to duckduckgo.com domains only — no third-party trackers. But the autocomplete feature does phone home. When I typed “how to fi…” the request to ac.duckduckgo.com included part of my IP address (the first two octets) in the URL parameters. This is standard for autocomplete, but worth noting if you’re concerned.

When I fell back to Google: About 8 times during my 3-day test. Mostly for very local queries (“dentist open now 78704”) and for searching Reddit comments from 2018 (Google’s site:reddit.com indexing is still better).

Verdict: DuckDuckGo is the best “drop-in replacement” if you want privacy without learning new workflows. But don’t assume zero data collection—read their privacy policy carefully. I use it as my secondary engine now.

Startpage: Google Results Without Google’s Tracking

Startpage has an interesting pitch: they show you Google’s search results, but they proxy them through their own servers. Your search goes to Startpage, they search Google on your behalf, strip out tracking, and send you the results.

I tested this extensively by searching for “best noise-canceling headphones 2026 reviews.” The results matched what I’d get from Google almost exactly—same ranking, same featured snippets, same knowledge panels. The difference: no “personalized results based on your search history” message, and no ads that seemed to know my browsing history.

Where it shines: For research-heavy queries, Startpage is unbeatable. The privacy claim: Startpage is based in the Netherlands, which has strong privacy laws. They claim to delete all IP logs after 48 hours. But here’s the thing: because they’re effectively “scraping” Google results, Google could theoretically detect that pattern. Startpage says they have measures to prevent this.

What I noticed during testing: On day 6, I searched for “crypto tax rules 2026 IRS.” Startpage returned a knowledge panel from Google with the IRS phone number. Clicking that link opened the IRS website directly—not proxied through Startpage. This happened consistently with certain government sites. So some traffic does bypass their proxy.

Brave Search: The Ambitious Independent

Brave Search launched in 2021 with a bold claim: they’d build their own search index from scratch, independent of Google and Bing. Two years later, they’ve made impressive progress, but independence isn’t absolute.

My testing: For English-language queries, Brave Search matched Google about 85-90% of the time. When I searched for “HTMX vs React performance benchmarks,” I got excellent results: benchmark posts, HN discussions, and official docs. When I searched for “บะหมี่กึ่งสำเร็จรูป” (instant noodles in Thai), the results were significantly worse than Google’s.

The privacy angle: Brave Search takes a unique approach. They don’t track you, but they do offer optional “personalization” features that store data locally on your device using web storage. No data leaves your machine.

The Goggles feature: This is Brave’s most interesting innovation. You can apply “Goggles” that re-rank results based on specific criteria. For example, the “Academic Goggle” boosts results from .edu domains and scholarly sources. The “Tech News Goggle” prioritizes Hacker News and tech blogs. I tested the “Productivity Goggle” and found it genuinely better for finding tool recommendations—it surfaced blog posts from independent developers rather than SEO-optimized roundups.

But here’s the catch: In April 2026, I noticed that Brave Search’s “mixed” results mode (which blends their index with fallback results from Bing) had become much more aggressive. Qwant is a French search engine that promotes itself as “the search engine that respects your privacy.” No tracking, no personalization, no filter bubble.

The good: Qwant’s interface is clean and pleasant. Their “Qwant Junior” mode for kids is genuinely useful—it filters adult content without being overly restrictive. When I tested it with my nephew (age 10, searching for “volcano experiments”), it returned safe, educational results.

The bad: The search quality is inconsistent. For English queries, Qwant often returns poorer results than DuckDuckGo. Searching for “JavaScript closures explained” on day 14 returned a mix of Medium articles (many of them low-quality) and a MDN link buried on page 2. Google and DuckDuckGo both had MDN as the first result.

Performance issues: During peak European hours (12-3 PM CET), Qwant’s response times jumped to 3-4 seconds. This happened consistently across my testing days. At 9 PM CET, it was snappy. So if you’re in the US and search during European work hours, expect slowdowns.

The infrastructure question: Qwant uses Microsoft’s Bing index for some results—particularly non-French queries. They’re transparent about this, but it means your query goes through French servers first, then to Microsoft. Qwant claims the data is anonymized. I’m less convinced, especially given Microsoft’s advertising business.

A specific data point: Qwant’s privacy policy says they “do not store any personal data” and that “search queries are anonymized.” But their own technical documentation mentions that they keep server logs for 24 hours for security purposes. The logs contain IP addresses. They say they don’t analyze them, but the data exists on their servers.

Verdict: Qwant is solid if you primarily search in French or European languages. For English-dominant users, there are better options. Their transparency about data handling is commendable, but the reliance on Bing is a concern.

SearXNG: The Open-Source Self-Hosted Option

If you’re technically inclined, SearXNG (pronounced “search-ng”) is the ultimate privacy solution. It’s an open-source metasearch engine that you host yourself. You send queries to your own server, which then forwards them to various search engines (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and dozens more) and strips all tracking.

Setting it up: I spun up a SearXNG instance on a $5/month DigitalOcean droplet using Docker. The official installation command is simple:

After that, I configured a Nginx reverse proxy with Let’s Encrypt SSL. Total time from zero to usable: about 45 minutes.

The result quality: This is where SearXNG shines and falls simultaneously. Because it aggregates from multiple engines, you can get incredible results. My default setup queried DuckDuckGo, Google, and Wikipedia simultaneously. For specialized searches, I could add Qwant, Brave, or academic engines.

When I searched for “machine learning anomaly detection time series” on day 18, SearXNG returned results from Google Scholar, arXiv, and Medium’s tech section—all on one page. No ads. No tracking. Just pure results.

The trade-off: Response time is slower because queries go through multiple backends. Average time for my instance: 2.3 seconds per search. Also, some engines actively block SearXNG instances. Google does, for example. Your SearXNG server might get temporarily rate-limited if you do many queries.

The real privacy: Because you host it yourself, no data ever leaves your server. Your ISP sees traffic to your server, but not the search content. You can also configure SearXNG to use Tor for outbound queries, adding another layer.

But it requires maintenance: Your instance can go down if you forget to renew SSL certs. Updates need manual application. And if someone discovers your instance, they could use it (and your server’s IP) for their searches. I implemented basic HTTP auth after finding my instance in Shodan’s search results.

Verdict: Best for technically-savvy users who value privacy over convenience. Not suitable for non-technical family members. But if you enjoy building and maintaining systems, it’s the gold standard for search privacy. Mojeek: The Underdog Independent Crawler

Mojeek (pronounced “mo- jeek”) is one of the few search engines operating its own crawler and index. They claim to have indexed over 7 billion pages as of June 2026. That’s impressive until you compare it to Google’s estimated 50+ billion.

Testing experience: Mojeek’s results are… unique. Searching for “climate change effects biodiversity” on day 22 returned a mix of academic papers, Wikipedia, and some unexpected sources like a local nature conservancy blog. The quality was decent, but the diversity of sources felt refreshing—no SEO-optimized content farms, no sponsored links pretending to be organic.

The privacy policy: Mojeek is based in the UK and explicitly states they do not track users, do not log IP addresses, and do not store search history. Their business model is a subscription ($2.50/month or $25/year). No ads. No data selling. This is the simplest privacy model you can have.

The honest limitation: The index is small. I tested 100 queries from my real search history; Mojeek had relevant results for 74 of them. For the missing 26, it either returned “no results” or results that were completely off-topic. Searching for “Kubernetes PodDisruptionBudget minAvailable” returned nothing useful. DuckDuckGo handled that query easily.

Performance: Fast, because the index is smaller. Results load in under 500ms consistently.

Who should use it: Mojeek is great for broad, informational queries where you want diverse perspectives. For exact technical questions or very specific products, it often falls short.

Verdict: A promising independent project that deserves support, but not ready as a daily driver for power users. I’m considering subscribing to support their mission, but I’d keep a secondary engine handy.

Swisscows: Privacy with a Family Focus

Swisscows markets itself as the “family-friendly private search engine.” It blocks adult content by default, uses semantic search instead of keyword matching, and operates from Switzerland with strict privacy laws.

Testing: The semantic search claim is interesting. When I searched for “how to fix a squeaky door,” Swisscows returned not just tutorials about hinges, but also results about door lubricants and types of hinges. It genuinely understood the intent behind the query.

For family use: With kids, this is the best option I tested. It blocks adult content automatically and you can’t disable it (which is intentional). However, it also blocks some legitimate content—Wikipedia’s article on sex education, for example, was filtered. That might be a feature or bug depending on your perspective.

Privacy: Swisscows uses server infrastructure in Switzerland, which has some of the strictest data protection laws globally (FADP). They claim to store zero personal data and do not log queries. In my network tests, I saw no third-party requests—just connections to swisscows.ch.

The weakness: Result quality is mediocre for technical searches. “Docker compose volumes bind mount” returned tutorial sites but missed the official Docker documentation until page 3. Google and DuckDuckGo both had docs.docker.com as the first result.

Search settings: They offer a “dark web” toggle for regular users. I tested it out of curiosity—it searches.onion domains via a Tor integration. Verdict: Excellent for families with young children. Not recommended for developers, researchers, or anyone who needs precise technical results. The semantic search is genuinely innovative but still immature.

Kagi: The Premium Choice for Privacy

Kagi is the newest entrant (2022) and takes a radically different approach: charge users directly, show no ads, and offer premium features. Plans start at $10/month for 300 searches, going up to $25/month for unlimited.

The experience: Kagi is, hands-down, the best search experience I’ve tested. Results are consistently high-quality, ranking slightly above DuckDuckGo and very close to Google. But the real power is in the customization.

Personalization layers: You can promote specific domains, block others, adjust result freshness, and even set “lenses” that filter results by type (web, news, academic, images, video). I promoted docs.python.org to always show first for Python queries. I blocked entire groups of content farms. After a week of tuning, my results were better than anything Google’s algorithm could produce.

The privacy: Kagi stores zero search history. They don’t track you. They don’t even know who you are—your account is associated with a payment method, but search data is completely separate. They’ve published their full architecture.

The honest downsides: $10/month adds up. For 10 searches per day (the base plan’s limit), that’s $1 per month for each search per day. It’s a luxury. Also, the search index is partially sourced from Google (through an agreement), so Google still knows some queries get sent to Kagi—but Kagi proxies them, so Google doesn’t know it’s you.

A specific test: On day 28, I searched for “best mechanical keyboard for programming 2026.” Kagi returned a mix of Reddit discussions, YouTube reviews, and a Wirecutter article. No sponsored results. No tracking. The first result was a Reddit thread with 2,000+ upvotes. Google’s first result was a paid roundup from a content farm. Kagi won that one.

Verdict: If you can afford it and you search heavily (50+ queries daily), Kagi is the best experience available. The personalization features are unmatched. But $120/year is a non-starter for many. It’s the search equivalent of premium coffee—you notice the difference, but you need to care enough to pay for it.

What About “Private Browsing Mode”?

Before I end, let me address the elephant in the room. Many people think incognito mode or private browsing is a privacy solution. It’s not. Private browsing + a private search engine = actual privacy. Private browsing alone is just hiding your history from your roommate.

The Boring Truth About Search Privacy

After 30 days of testing, here’s the uncomfortable conclusion: no free search engine is truly private. They all need to monetize somehow—through ads (even contextual ones), through selling your data (even in aggregated form), or through selling your attention (via algorithms that keep you searching).

The engines that come closest to true privacy are Kagi (paid, transparent business model) and self-hosted SearXNG (you control the infrastructure). Everything else involves some compromise.

DuckDuckGo is the pragmatic choice for most people. It’s good enough, private enough, and easy enough that you’ll actually switch. Kagi is the aspirational choice—if privacy matters enough to open your wallet.

My Final Setup

After the experiment, I settled on this workflow:

  • Daily driver: DuckDuckGo for most searches.

  • Experimentation: I keep a small SearXNG instance running on a VPS for curiosity-driven deep dives.

This setup costs me $5/month (the VPS) and gives me 95% of Google’s result quality with near-total privacy. The missing 5% is the price I pay for not being the product.

The next time you search for an itchy rash at 3 AM or wonder about the best way to remove Sharpie from upholstery, ask yourself: do you want that factoid feeding into a profile that’s auctioned to the highest bidder? If the answer is no, it’s time to make a switch.
