I Tested 12 Private Search Engines for 30 Days — Here's What Actually Protects Your Privacy in 2025
I spent the last 30 days living entirely on private search engines. No Google, no Bing, no Yahoo — just 12 services that claim to protect your privacy.
Here’s the thing I learned immediately: “Private” doesn’t mean what most people think it means.
Some private search engines still track your IP address. Some sell aggregated data. Some partner with Google to serve results. And a few — just a handful — actually deliver on the promise of anonymous search.

Once it was running, SearXNG aggregated results from Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing, Wikipedia, and about 80 other engines. The results were… chaotic. Different engines returned different rankings, and SearXNG’s merge algorithm doesn’t always produce coherent result pages.
What I loved: Total control. My SearXNG instance logged nothing to disk. No IP addresses, no search queries, nothing. It’s the most private option if you can host it.

Mojeek (v2025)
Mojeek is the underdog story I wanted to root for. They’ve been building their own search index since 2004, long before Brave tried it.
Their index claims to have 5 billion pages. For comparison, Google’s index is hundreds of billions. That gap shows.

Privacy: Mojeek doesn’t track anything. No cookies, no IP logging, nada. Their privacy policy is delightfully short: “We don’t track you.”
The honest assessment: Mojeek is only useful if you’re okay with 2015-level search quality. For basic informational queries, it works. For anything specific, it fails.
The Niche Options
Qwant (v2025.2)
Qwant is a French search engine that’s been around since 2013. It’s popular in Europe because it’s based in France and follows strict GDPR rules.
When I tested it, Qwant’s results felt like Bing-lite. The layout is clean, with separate tabs for web, news, images, and videos. Their news aggregation is surprisingly good — for “technology news today,” Qwant returned results from 20+ sources with timestamps.
The privacy policy: Qwant states they don’t use tracking cookies or store personal data. They use anonymized data for analytics. That’s a minor compromise but acceptable.
The frustrating part: Qwant’s image search is almost unusable. It returns very few results compared to DuckDuckGo or Google. And their “Qwant Maps” feature is just OpenStreetMap — useful but not competitive with Google Maps for local businesses.
Swisscows (v2025)
Swisscows markets itself as a “family-friendly” search engine. They filter adult content by default, which is good for parents but annoying for adults doing legitimate searches.
Privacy: Swisscows hosts servers in Switzerland (hence the name), which has strong privacy laws. They claim zero logging. When I checked network requests, I only saw connections to Swisscows’ servers — no third-party calls.
Search quality: Below average. For “Rust programming tutorial,” Swisscows returned seven results, four of which were from the same website. Bing results populated the rest of the page.
The surprise: Swisscows’ video search works surprisingly well. For “how to change car oil,” it returned high-quality YouTube videos. I suspect this uses YouTube’s API, which means some limited exposure to Google.
MetaGer (v2025)
MetaGer is a German meta-search engine run by a non-profit, SUMA-EV. It aggregates results from Google, Bing, and other engines, similar to SearXNG.
When I tested it, MetaGer’s results were comparable to Startpage — high quality because they’re pulling from Google. But MetaGer adds a layer of anonymization.
The standout feature: MetaGer offers a proxy service for all search results, not just some. Every click goes through their proxy, protecting your IP. This slows down page loading by 1-2 seconds, but for sensitive searches, it’s worth it.
The cost: MetaGer costs about €0.003 per search (they’re transparent about this). They rely on donations and small fees. For heavy users, the costs add up.
Ecosia (v2025.4)
Ecosia isn’t primarily a privacy search engine — it’s a climate-focused one. They use ad revenue to plant trees. But they also claim strong privacy protections.
The good: Ecosia uses Bing’s index (like DuckDuckGo), so search quality is decent. They don’t sell your data, and they anonymize searches within a week. They publish financial reports transparently.
The bad: Ecosia’s business model relies on ads. They store search queries on their servers for up to 7 days before anonymizing. That’s better than Google’s indefinite storage, but worse than DuckDuckGo’s zero-storage approach.

The Surprising Winner Nobody Talks About
After 30 days of switching between all these, I expected to settle on DuckDuckGo as my daily driver. I didn’t.
Brave Search won.

One specific example: When I searched for “TypeScript discriminated union pattern,” Brave returned the TypeScript handbook as the first result, followed by a Medium article, then a Stack Overflow thread. DuckDuckGo returned three Stack Overflow threads and two Medium articles. The TypeScript handbook result was buried.
That matters to me as a frontend engineer. Brave’s ranking algorithm seems better optimized for technical content.
What About VPNs and Private Search?

Browser fingerprinting: DuckDuckGo and Brave can’t stop websites from fingerprinting your browser. When you click a search result, the destination site sees your browser’s unique profile — installed fonts, screen resolution, timezone, language settings. This can identify you even without cookies.
DNS leaks: If you’re not using a private DNS provider, your ISP sees every domain you visit, even without seeing the full URL. DuckDuckGo’s app routes searches through their servers, but the browser version doesn’t.
I noticed this specifically when testing from my home network. Even with DuckDuckGo as the search engine, my ISP’s DNS server logged duckduckgo.com as a visited domain.
