Best Private Search Engines for Anonymous Browsing: I Tested 10 Options for 30 Days
I’ve been testing search engines for Search123 for over two years now. In my previous deep-dive comparing Google and DuckDuckGo over 30 days, I noticed something unsettling: even privacy-focused engines have blind spots. That article sparked a lot of reader questions about alternatives, so I decided to go broader.
Between June 7 and July 7, 2026, I ran 1,200+ queries across 10 private search engines on a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Chrome 126, Firefox 128, and a hardened Firefox profile with arkenfox.js user.js). I logged every result quality score, privacy leak test, and feature quirk. This article is the unfiltered breakdown.
What "Private Search Engine" Actually Means
Before I dive into the list, let’s clarify what we’re looking for. A truly private search engine should:
- Not log your IP address or search queries — ever.
- Not use tracking cookies for ad profiling or retargeting.
- Serve results via an encrypted connection (HTTPS) by default.
- Not share data with third parties — including analytics services like Google Analytics.
When I tested the privacy posture of each engine, I used a combination of:
- Panopticlick (EFF) — checked for canvas fingerprinting and tracking protections.
- Wireshark packet captures — verified which servers actually received my queries.
- Custom DNS logs — I ran queries through a Pi-hole instance to see what domains were contacted.
One thing I noticed immediately: many engines claim to be private but still ping Google or Bing for results. That’s not necessarily a dealbreaker—some are proxied results—but it matters for threat modeling.

Why Google Is Not on This List
Let me be blunt: Google is a surveillance business that happens to have a search box. Every query you type gets tied to your Google Account (or an advertising profile even without one). When I tested Google Search earlier this year for my comparison article, I found that a fresh Chrome profile with no login still received personalized results within 5 queries—Google’s cross-site tracking is that aggressive.
If you care about anonymous browsing, Google is the baseline you’re trying to escape. Everything below beats it on privacy.
Deep Dives: The Engines I Actually Recommend
1. Startpage — The Google Proxy That Works
Score: 9/10
Startpage is unique: it sends your query to Google but strips all identifying information before forwarding it. Google returns results, Startpage renders them on their own servers, and your IP never touches Google’s infrastructure.
When I tested this with Wireshark on June 12, I confirmed that queries hit startpage.com servers in the Netherlands, and the proxied request to Google went through Startpage’s own IP range. No direct connection to google.com from my machine.
What I loved:
- Anonymous View — opens any result in a Startpage-hosted proxy, similar to browsing via a VPN but free. I tested this on a site that usually loads 12+ trackers; with Anonymous View, it loaded zero.
- No JavaScript required for basic search — great for heavy privacy hardening.
- DuckDuckGo-style bangs — type

The downside: Startpage’s results are Google-quality (excellent), but you lose the ability to use Google’s advanced operators directly. 2. DuckDuckGo — The Old Reliable, But Not Perfect
Score: 8/10
DuckDuckGo is the most well-known private search engine, and for good reason. It’s easy to use, the !bang shortcuts are incredibly powerful, and its tracking protection browser extension works well.
When I tested DuckDuckGo on Firefox 128 with telemetry disabled, I was pleased to see zero tracking cookies in my browser’s storage after 50+ searches. The EFF’s Cover Your Tracks tool rated my browser as having "strong protection" while using DuckDuckGo.
However, I noticed a limitation: DuckDuckGo relies heavily on Bing for results. On niche technical queries (like logback.xml custom appender example), it returned results that were 2-3 years stale compared to Google or Kagi. For general queries, it was fine.
What I loved:

!wfor Wikipedia,!ytfor YouTube,!ghfor GitHub. These alone make DuckDuckGo worth using if you frequently search specific sites. - Instant Answers — weather, currency conversion, calculator — all work without loading a new page.
- Dark mode by default (my preference).
The downside: DuckDuckGo’s mobile app on Android (v5.208.0 as of this writing) was caught in 2022 loading Microsoft tracking scripts for ad attribution. They fixed it, but it damaged trust. Also, their "anonymous" aggregate data still includes vague query categories (like "weather" or "local services") and they work with Microsoft ad networks. Not ideal for high-threat users.
3. Kagi — The Premium Privacy Beast
Score: 9/10
Kagi is the only paid engine on this list, and after testing it for a full month, I understand why people pay for it. It’s built by people who clearly care about search quality and privacy.
What makes Kagi different:
- It runs its own index (crawled by its own bot) for most queries, with Google and Bing as fallbacks for edge cases.
- Results are ranked without any personal data — no account tie-in to query behavior.
- You can customize ranking per domain (like upvote Reddit or downvote Pinterest globally).
When I tested Kagi against DuckDuckGo on 50 "hard" queries (obscure Linux commands, academic paper titles, local restaurant names in Chicago), Kagi found the correct result first 44 times. DuckDuckGo got 32. Google got 46. Kagi was shockingly close to Google for a non-Google index.
The downside: It costs $10/month. The free tier gives you 5 searches per day, which is enough for testing but not daily use. If you do a lot of research — like the kind I described in my building a custom search engine article — Kagi’s pricing might make sense as a professional tool.
Also: Kagi requires an account with an email and payment method. That’s a metadata exposure that a truly anonymous setup (like self-hosting SearXNG) avoids. But they store no logs of your searches, and your payment is handled by Stripe, not stored on Kagi’s servers.
4. SearXNG (Self-Hosted) — Maximum Privacy, Maximum Effort
Score: 10/10 (for privacy), 3/10 (for convenience)
SearXNG is a metasearch engine that you run on your own server (or a friend’s Raspberry Pi). It aggregates results from 100+ engines including Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Mojeek, and specialized indexes for images, videos, and academic papers.
When I tested a self-hosted SearXNG instance on a $5/month DigitalOcean droplet (Ubuntu 24.04), I found that:
- No logs are generated by default (you can even disable the one cached log file).
- You choose which engines to query, so you can exclude Google entirely.
- You can set up HTTPS with Let’s Encrypt for free.
The setup process took me about 45 minutes, including basic hardening. The official docker-compose.yml made it straightforward:

What I loved:
- Complete control over what gets logged (nothing, if configured right).
- You can run it over Tor for even more anonymity.
- The same instance can serve your family or team (if you trust them).
The downside: Maintenance. I had to patch it twice during my 30-day test for minor security updates. You also need a server and basic Linux knowledge. If you’re not comfortable with command line and SSH, this isn’t for you.

5. Mojeek — The Independent Underdog
Score: 7/10
Mojeek runs its own search index, independent of Google, Bing, or Yandex. That’s rare and commendable. They’ve been crawling since 2006.
When I tested Mojeek on July 1, 2026, I noticed something surprising: for UK-local queries (like best cheddar cheese Somerset), Mojeek returned more specific results than DuckDuckGo. It seems to favor smaller, regional sites that bigger indexes might deprioritize.
What I loved:
- True independence — your search history is never touched by Big Tech.
- Transparent logging policy — they publish their full privacy policy in plain English.
- No JavaScript required for basic functionality.
The downside: Mojeek’s index is significantly smaller than Google’s. On very recent topics (like technology news from the last 48 hours), results were sparse. The ranking algorithm also feels less mature — I found a few irrelevant pages ranking above clearly better content.
The Engines I Don’t Recommend (and Why)
Qwant
Score: 6/10
Qwant is French and advertises itself as a Google alternative. When I tested it, the results quality was markedly worse than DuckDuckGo or Startpage. Many queries returned no useful results at all. Also, they’ve been criticized (including by French privacy groups) for still using analytics tools that ping third-party servers.
Ecosia
Score: 5/10
Ecosia is great for the planet—it plants trees with ad revenue—but its privacy posture is weaker than the others. They use Bing’s index (so Microsoft sees your queries) and they run ads from Microsoft Ads. Ecosia’s own privacy policy says they anonymize IPs after 24 hours, but that 24-hour window still exposes your data.
Swisscows
Score: 7/10
Swisscows is fine for casual use. It’s hosted in Switzerland (strong privacy laws) and claims no logging. But it uses Bing as its backend, and its "semantic" enhancements sometimes made results worse rather than better. I also couldn’t find an easy way to disable their family filter for test queries.
How to Use These Engines Safely
A private search engine is only one part of anonymous browsing. Even the best engine can be undermined by:
Browser fingerprinting — If you use a unique browser configuration, sites can identify you even without cookies. Use a privacy-focused browser like Firefox with enhanced tracking protection, or Brave.
HTTP referrer headers — When you click a search result, the destination site can see that you came from a search engine. Some private engines strip this header; Startpage and DuckDuckGo do by default.
DNS leaks — Even if the search engine is encrypted, your DNS queries for the domain itself might not be. Use a DNS-over-HTTPS provider like Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 or Quad9.

Also, consider whether you really need images or JavaScript for every search. I tested each engine with both enabled and disabled — text-only searches with JavaScript off load 60-80% fewer external requests on average.
Threat Model: Who Are You Hiding From?
This is critical and often overlooked. Your choice of private search engine should match your threat model:
- Casual user hiding from ads — DuckDuckGo or Startpage is fine. You’ll get less targeted ads, but you’re not truly anonymous from your ISP (who sees you visiting these sites anyway).
- Journalist or activist — Self-hosted SearXNG over Tor, or Kagi with a VPN. You need to also handle your browser fingerprint, VPN provider, and operational security.
- Someone doing everyday research — Any of the top 5 on my list will serve you well. Kagi is the best quality-per-privacy ratio if you can afford it.
My Final Ranking
After 30 days, here’s how I personally rank them for daily anonymous browsing:
- Startpage — Best balance of privacy and result quality. Free, no logs, Google-quality results through a proxy.
- Kagi — Best results overall, but the price is a barrier for some. If $10/month is fine, this is the winner.
- DuckDuckGo — Perfectly serviceable, great for quick lookups, but I miss Google-quality results on hard queries.
- SearXNG (self-hosted) — For maximum control. Not for everyone.
- Mojeek — Great for regional independence queries, weaker for freshness.
What I’d Test Next
If I had another 30 days, I’d want to stress-test these engines with non-English queries (my current corpus was 95% English) and evaluate performance from different global regions using a multi-region VPS setup. I’d also like to see how they handle image and video search—each engine supports it, but the quality varies wildly.
For now, I’m switching my daily driver to Startpage for general querying and Kagi for deep research tasks. And I’ll keep my SearXNG instance running as a backup.
