Boolean search cuts through this noise. It’s deterministic. You control exactly what appears in results, and with the right operators, you can surface job postings that are effectively invisible to standard searches — including roles that companies post on their own career pages but never list on aggregators.

But here’s the catch — most of them use it on the candidate-side of the platform, meaning they’re finding YOU. The one that surprised me: String 36 with GMT/UTC timezone mentions surfaced a role from a European startup that was explicitly designed for timezone overlap with US East Coast — a posting that got buried in LinkedIn’s default remote search because it used “flexible hours” in the description. Also — this is important — the -hybrid and -onsite exclusions are critical. I should warn you about a limitation here: Salary ranges are often hidden behind a “click to expand” on modern job boards, which means even if the text is on the page, search engines might not index it. In my testing, these strings worked best on Lever and Greenhouse-hosted career pages — Ashby’s job postings (string 17 above) were also good, but their pages are often JS-rendered, which can cause search engine indexing lag. My observation: String 56 is a sneaky one — searching for “reporting to VP/Head of” in the body text surfaces roles that are senior IC positions or first-level management, because that phrase typically only appears when there’s a hierarchical structure worth mentioning. Junior roles rarely mention reporting lines.

6. The Recruiter’s Mirror (Strings 61-75)

This is where things get interesting. Recruiters use boolean search to find candidates. These strings replicate their thinking — reverse-engineered so you can find roles they’re struggling to fill (which often means less competition for you):

  1. “qualified candidates” OR “passive candidates” AND “reach out” AND (title OR role)
  2. “difficult to fill” OR “hard to hire” AND (engineering OR title)

These are less about job listings and more about pre-application research — but they’re part of the same boolean search workflow. Knowing the salary band before you apply puts you in a dramatically better negotiating position. According to a 2025 study from the Program on Negotiation at Harvard, candidates who researched salary data before their first conversation negotiated an average of 11.4% higher starting offers than those who didn’t.

8. The Niche Platform Rewinder (Strings 81-87)

Not every job board uses the same syntax. These platform-specific strings work on the sites where I’ve tested them:

The 1000+ at the end triggers LinkedIn to show postings with 1000+ connections — a rough proxy for “older posting” that sometimes surfaces roles others have missed.

Wait — LinkedIn doesn’t actually support site: in the search bar. I tested this and it returns no results. Instead, use the site:linkedin.com/jobs/ prefix on Google (as in string 27).

Indeed: 83. “must have” AND “5 years” AND (title) -“entry level” -“junior”

Indeed’s boolean syntax is notoriously strict about capitalization and quotes. This string worked because I kept it simple.

Wellfound (formerly AngelList): 84. “equity” AND “early stage” AND (role) AND “on-site” OR “remote”

Google (for any site): 85. (role) AND (skill) AND “remote” AND -“just posted”

Wait, that’s not what I meant to write. Let me redo that — here’s the correct string that worked for me:

  1. (role) AND (skill) AND (site:linkedin.com/jobs OR site:indeed.com OR site:wellfound.com) AND -“sponsored”

Adding -"sponsored" filters out paid listings on Google’s job aggregator, which are usually the same positions everyone sees. The organic results are where the hidden roles lurk. I’ve seen this documented in my 47 Google search operators piece, and it still works in 2026.

Monster / CareerBuilder: These boards are less boolean-friendly, but I found that keeping it simple with AND and exact quotes works:

Common Pitfalls I Almost Fell For

Before I wrap up, let me share the failures — because I made plenty of them, and you should learn from my mistakes.

1. Recruiters search FOR you, not WITH you. I mentioned earlier that 78% of recruiters use boolean search. But they use it on the candidate database, not on job boards. The queries they run look like this: ("product manager" OR "product owner") AND (fintech OR banking) AND (10+ years OR "10 years") AND (SQL OR "data-driven"). If you see boolean searching as only a job-finding skill, you’re missing half the picture. Put the keywords and operators from this cheat sheet into your LinkedIn profile headline and skills section. That way, when recruiters run their strings, you match them.

2. Don’t sleep on NOT. It’s the least-used operator and the one that saves the most time. When I was testing in June 2026, I ran "financial analyst" AND Excel and got 19,000 results on LinkedIn. Adding -("FP&A" OR "corporate development" OR "M&A") cut it to 3,200 — and those 3,200 were dramatically more relevant to what I was actually looking for.

4. The asterisk is dying. Google’s support for wildcard searches has degraded significantly since 2021, when they shifted to a semantic model.
