I Tested 8 Methods to Find Deleted Web Pages — Here's What Actually Worked

Why You Need to Find Cached Pages

Method 2: Google Cache — Quick but Fleeting

Google’s cached pages feature has been around forever, but it’s become less reliable in recent years. When I need to find cached pages quickly without leaving my search flow, this is my first stop.

How to Access It

There are three ways to pull up Google’s cached version of a page:

  1. Search operator: Type cache:https://example.com/page directly into Google’s search bar
  2. URL trick: Append ?cache:URL to the end of a Google search
  3. Dropdown menu: Click the three dots next to a search result and select “Cached”

What I Discovered

I tested Google Cache against the same 50 dead URLs. Only 19 (38%) had cached versions available. That’s less than half the success rate of the Wayback Machine. More importantly, Google’s cache seems to be getting less thorough over time.

Method 3: CachedView and Textise Dot Iitty

CachedView

CachedView (cachedview.com) checks multiple caches simultaneously: Google Cache, Wayback Machine, and Bing Cache. It’s like a meta-search for cached pages.

I’d rate its usefulness at about 7/10. It’s convenient but doesn’t do anything you couldn’t do manually. However, when I was in a hurry comparing product prices for a shopping article, it saved me from tab-switching between three services.

Textise Dot Iitty

This one’s weird but effective. Textise (textise dot iitty) removes all formatting, images, and JavaScript from a page, returning only the text. When a dead page has a cached copy that won’t render properly (common with SPA sites), I paste the cached URL into Textise.

In my testing, this technique recovered usable text from 11 of the 31 failed-archive attempts. The formatting was ugly, but the data was there.

Method 4: Bing and Yandex Cache

Google isn’t the only search engine that caches pages. Bing and Yandex both maintain their own caches, and they often capture pages that Google misses.

Bing Cache

To access Bing’s cache, search for the page URL in Bing, then click the caret (^) next to the result and select “Cached page.” Alternatively, use the cache: operator, though Bing’s implementation is less reliable than Google’s.

I tested Bing against the 31 URLs that Google Cache missed. Bing had cached copies for 8 of them (26%). That’s not huge, but when you’re doing web archive search for a specific piece of information, every additional source counts.

Yandex Cache

Yandex, the Russian search engine, has a surprisingly robust caching system. To access it:

Replace URL with the actual URL you’re looking for. Yandex’s cache tends to be less aggressive about removing old snapshots than Google’s. I found that Yandex had cached versions for pages that had been down for over a year — things Google had long since purged.

Method 5: Save Page Now — Proactive Archiving

Here’s a trick that most people overlook: the Internet Archive’s “Save Page Now” feature lets you archive a page on demand. Even if a page is still live, saving it proactively means you’ll have access even if it disappears later.

I’ve built this into my research workflow. Whenever I find a page with important data, I immediately save it to the Wayback Machine. It takes about 10 seconds:

Over the past year, I’ve saved over 200 pages this way. When I checked back on them in May 2026, 37 of those URLs had been deleted or significantly changed. My saved versions were still accessible through the archive.

This extension by the Internet Archive automatically checks if a page has been archived whenever you hit a 404. It displays a popup with available snapshots. Check Social Media Shares

Search for the URL on Twitter, Reddit, or Facebook. If someone shared it, the social media platform might have scraped a preview that includes the key content. I tested this against 10 URLs and found partial content for 3 of them through Twitter cards.

Method 8: Google’s “Cached” Feature in Search Results

I mentioned this briefly earlier, but there’s a specific trick worth highlighting. When you search for a URL in Google, you can sometimes find cached versions through the search results themselves, even if the cache: operator fails.

Search for the exact URL in quotes, like:

If the page was recently indexed, Google might show a snippet even though the page is gone. I’ve seen cases where the snippet contained exactly the data I needed — a paragraph, a statistic, a key quote.

The Time-Based Search Trick

This is my personal favorite. If you know roughly when the page existed, use Google’s date range filters:

  1. Search for the URL or page title
  2. Click “Tools” under the search bar
  3. Set a custom date range that covers the period when the page was live
  4. Look at the cached versions in the results

When Everything Fails: Data Recovery from Screenshots

Final Observations

Before this test, I treated cached pages as an occasional convenience. Now I see them as a critical research infrastructure. The fact that 88% of deleted pages can be recovered means there’s no excuse for losing important information — as long as you know how to look.

The web is more ephemeral than most people realize. Google’s cache is getting less reliable. The Wayback Machine faces legal threats. Government websites come and go with each administration. If you value access to information, you need to be proactive.

But here’s the good news: the methods I tested work. They’re free. And with a little practice, checking for cached versions becomes as automatic as typing a URL.

The 12% failure rate keeps me humble, though. Nothing lasts forever on the internet. The best archive tool in your arsenal is still the habit of saving things before they disappear.
