I Tested Boolean Search Operators for 30 Days: Here's What Actually Narrows Results

The AND operator was the clear winner for precision. The NOT operator eliminated productivity-focused results entirely — useful if you want remote work articles that don’t discuss productivity, but a warning if you thought it would just de-prioritize them.
The Quote Operator: My Biggest Time Saver
If I could only teach one boolean technique to anyone reading this, it would be phrase searching with quotation marks. When I tested "project management software" vs project management software (without quotes), the difference was staggering:
- Without quotes on Google: 1.1 billion results
- With quotes on Google: 89 million results (92% reduction)
- Without quotes on DuckDuckGo: 873 million results
- With quotes on DuckDuckGo: 64 million results (93% reduction)

cats OR dogs AND "pet insurance": Google returned 47 million results. First page had 4 results about cat-specific insurance, 3 about dog-specific, and 3 mixed. The engine treated the AND first (because AND has implicit higher precedence in most search engines), so it actually ran ascats OR (dogs AND "pet insurance").(cats OR dogs) AND "pet insurance": Google returned 39 million results. First page had 8 results covering both cats and dogs, 2 about dogs only. Much more balanced.
This is one of those details that sounds pedantic until you’re 30 minutes deep into a search and realize you’ve been looking at the wrong set of results. The synonym version caught articles that used “automobile” or “vehicle” instead of “car.” Precision dropped slightly (7/10 on page 1 vs 9/10 for the simpler query) but recall improved significantly.
When to use this: Academic research, legal research, or any domain where terminology varies. When I was working on finding reliable sources for research papers, I used (climate OR "global warming" OR "climate change") AND (policy OR regulation OR legislation) and it captured documents that used different terminology.
Pattern 3: The Exact Phrase with Date Anchor
Purpose: Find recent, specific information
Query: "according to a 2025 study" AND (productivity OR "remote work")
Results on Google (April 26): 8,300 results. The precision was 10/10 on page 1 — every result cited a specific 2025 study. This pattern worked because it anchored the search to a time frame without relying on Google’s sometimes-inaccurate date filter.
Limitation I noticed: Google’s date filter (Tools > Any time > Custom range) is more reliable for recent content. But for content from 2022-2025, the date filter can miss older articles that were updated. The phrase anchor trick avoids that issue.
Pattern 4: The Site-Scoped Boolean
Purpose: Limit searches to authoritative domains
Query: site:.gov AND "data breach" AND (2024 OR 2025)
Results on Google: 2,900 results (April 28). Without site:.gov, the same query returned 47 million. This pattern is essential when you need government data — like when I was writing the guide to government data and public records.
Important note: You can combine site: with other operators, but Google sometimes ignores AND when site: is present. I confirmed this by comparing site:.gov AND "data breach" with site:.gov "data breach" (without AND). The result counts were identical — 2,904 and 2,901 respectively, well within margin of error. So you can usually skip the AND when using site:.
Pattern 5: The File Type Finder
Purpose: Find specific document formats
Query: "quantum computing" filetype:pdf AND (tutorial OR "beginners guide" OR introduction)
Results on Google (April 30): 423,000 results. Without filetype:pdf, 16.8 million. The PDF filter is especially useful for finding whitepapers, academic papers, and official documentation.
DuckDuckGo note: DuckDuckGo supports filetype: but less reliably. I tested the same query and got 287,000 results — but 3 of the first 10 links weren’t PDFs. Google’s enforcement was stricter.
Pattern 6: The Social Media Search
Purpose: Find conversations on specific platforms
Query: site:reddit.com AND "best wireless headphones" AND (2025 OR 2026)
Results on Google: 28,000 results. Unfiltered "best wireless headphones" returned 94 million. The site-specific approach surfaces actual discussions rather than review sites.

Pattern 7: The OR-AND-NOT Sandwich
Purpose: Broad coverage with precise exclusions
Query: (Python OR JavaScript OR TypeScript) AND ("web development" OR "full stack") NOT (React OR Vue OR Angular)
Results on Google (May 2): 12.4 million results. This query finds web development content that doesn’t focus on the big three frameworks — useful for discovering lesser-known tools like Svelte, Solid, or Astro.
My in-use test: I wanted to find articles about Python web development that weren’t about Django or Flask. Python AND "web development" NOT (Django OR Flask) returned 3.2 million results and surfaced articles about FastAPI, Pyramid, and even some about building frameworks from scratch.
The Search Engine-Specific Differences I Discovered
I ran the same 5 queries across Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo every 3 days for 30 days. Here’s what I observed:
Google’s Boolean Interpretation
Google treats AND as optional in many cases. When I tested cats AND dogs, Google returned the same results as cats dogs. But when I tested "cats" AND "dogs" (with quotes on each individual word), Google enforced the AND. My hypothesis — confirmed by comparing results for 15 paired queries — is that Google ignores bare AND between single words but respects AND between phrases.

Test on May 4: Query "project management" AND "agile" NOT "scrum":
- Google: 31.2 million results, but 3 of 10 page-1 results mentioned scrum anyway
- DuckDuckGo: 18.7 million results, 0 of 10 mentioned scrum
- Bing: 24.1 million results, 1 of 10 mentioned scrum
DuckDuckGo was strictest with NOT enforcement. Google was loosest. If precision is your priority, DuckDuckGo with boolean operators is hard to beat.
Bing’s Middle Ground
Bing sits between Google and DuckDuckGo. It respects operators but allows some synonym expansion. On my test queries, Bing’s results were consistently 15-20% fewer than Google’s for the same boolean query, suggesting stricter enforcement.
One thing I noticed: Bing’s result counts fluctuate more than Google’s. On April 14, "machine learning" AND (Python OR R) returned 4.2 million. On April 17, same query returned 5.1 million. Google’s count was stable at 3.8 million both times. I’m not sure why, but it’s worth noting if you’re tracking results over time.
The Practical Workflow I Use Now

Step 1: Start broad, then add one operator at a time

Step 3: Save complex queries as search engine shortcuts

The Biggest Failures I Encountered
Not everything worked. Here are the operators and patterns that failed consistently:
Failure 1: NOT Inside Quotes
NOT "something" doesn’t work the way you’d think. I tested cats NOT "dog food" — Google returned results about cat food, but some results still contained the phrase “dog food” in the page text (just not in the snippet). The NOT operator in Google applies to the visible snippet, not the full page content. DuckDuckGo was slightly better (2 out of 10 page-1 results still had the excluded phrase) but not perfect.
Failure 2: Negative Site Filters
I tried -site:amazon.com to exclude Amazon from shopping results. It worked for the first page but subsequent pages still showed Amazon results. I tested this across 4 shopping-related queries and saw similar behavior. The -site: operator is a suggestion, not a hard filter, for most engines.
Failure 3: Wildcards at the Start of a Phrase
"* is the best" returned zero results on Google and Bing. Wildcards work in the middle or end of phrases but not at the beginning. I confirmed this with 10 test queries — "best * ever" returned results, "* is the best" returned nothing on all three engines.
Failure 4: Nested ORs Without Parentheses
A OR B OR C AND D is parsed unpredictably. I tested Python OR JavaScript OR TypeScript AND web development on Google and got 894 million results. When I wrapped the OR group in parentheses — (Python OR JavaScript OR TypeScript) AND web development — I got 327 million. The first query effectively ran as Python OR JavaScript OR (TypeScript AND web development), which is not what I wanted.
Testing Methodology Notes
For transparency, here’s exactly how I ran these tests:
- Device: MacBook Air M2, 16GB RAM, macOS 15.4 (Sequoia)
