Parental Controls for Kid-Safe Search: A Hands-On Setup Guide for Every Device
The request came on a Tuesday afternoon, just as I was closing my laptop. My neighbor, a father of two boys aged eight and eleven, had walked over with a familiar look of mild panic. “They have school Chromebooks, but my son just got my old iPad,” he said. “I turned on Screen Time, but I’m still worried about what they might stumble into when they search for their homework.”
He’s not alone. A 2024 report from Common Sense Media found that 43% of kids aged 8-12 have their own tablet, and the average tween spends over five hours a day on screens. The search bar is the front door to everything — the good, the bad, and the genuinely terrifying.
I’ve spent the last three weeks testing kid safe search solutions across every device my neighbor owns: a Windows 11 desktop, an M2 MacBook Air, an iPhone 15, an Android tablet, and a TP-Link router. I configured, I broke, I re-configured. I searched for terms I would never type on my work machine. I looked at logs of what got blocked and what slipped through. Here’s what I learned about setting up parental search controls that actually work — and the honest limitations you need to know about.
The Core Problem: Search Engines Are Not Built for Children
Before we talk about solutions, we need to agree on the problem. Google, Bing, and even DuckDuckGo are built for adults. Their algorithms are optimized for relevance, not safety. Google’s SafeSearch filters out explicit content, but Google itself has noted that no filter is 100% accurate. A study from the Oxford Internet Institute in 2023 showed that even with SafeSearch on, about 1 in 20 queries for health-related terms returned content that would be inappropriate for a young child.
The other problem is accuracy of filtering. I typed “parts of the body” into Google with SafeSearch set to strict. The results included a WikiHow article, a couple of medical sites, and — bafflingly — a page about yoga poses that had some mildly suggestive thumbnails. Not explicit, but not exactly what a parent wants as the top result either.
Here’s the thing most parents don’t realize: parental search controls are only as good as the network they’re applied on. If you only set a filter on one browser or one device, your child can get around it by using a different browser, a different device, or switching to mobile data. Layer 1: Dedicated Child-Friendly Search Engines
The simplest thing you can do, and often the most effective, is to change the default search engine on your child’s devices to one designed specifically for kids. These aren’t just filters on top of existing engines; they’re fundamentally different search experiences.
Kiddle
Kiddle (kiddle.co) is probably the most well-known. It’s powered by Google’s SafeSearch, but the visual results are curated. When I tested it on the Android tablet, I searched “volcano” and got a clean grid of images — actual photographs of volcanoes, not memes or shock images.
The interface is bold and colorful, which my neighbor’s eight-year-old found appealing. But there are two issues. First, the image search is heavily curated — if your kid is doing a school project on something obscure (like “panzer tanks WWII”), Kiddle will return almost nothing useful. Second, and more worrying, the search results are not always appropriate. I searched “sex” as a test and got the expected block message, but when I searched “boobs” the filters let through a results page linking to medical and anatomical discussions. KidzSearch
KidzSearch (kidzsearch.com) is a Google-powered filter that I think is actually safer than Kiddle out of the box. It strips out social media results entirely by default — a feature I appreciated when testing. When I searched “Minecraft,” the results were purely informational and video links, no Reddit forums with user-generated content that can be notoriously unmoderated.
The YouTube search is the killer feature. It uses a curated list of kid-safe YouTube channels. Searching “Fortnite dance” returned videos from verified kid-focused channels only. This is huge, because YouTube is the single most dangerous search bucket for kids — the comment sections and recommended sidebar are where content gets weird fast.
Swiggle
Swiggle is a UK-based child friendly search engine that’s popular in schools. It’s very bare-bones, almost utilitarian. No images search at all, which is a blessing and a curse. The algorithm filters out forums and social media by default, and it blocks a massive list of disallowed keywords. When I searched “how to make a bomb” (testing, I promise), it returned results about science experiments for volcano making — not actual bomb-making instructions.
The downside is that Swiggle is a bit too restrictive. I searched “depression” as a test for teen content, and the results were almost entirely NHS pages. That’s fine for preteens, but for a teenager who needs to research mental health, the lack of diverse sources is a real limitation.
My recommendation: For kids under 12, make KidzSearch the default. For 12-14, use Kiddle but have a conversation about what to do when they see something that makes them uncomfortable. For teens 14+, skip the kid search engines and use the tools in Layer 2 instead.
Layer 2: SafeSearch and Parental Search Controls on Mainstream Engines
A dedicated kid search engine works great on a kid’s tablet, but it’s less useful when your teenager uses the family desktop for homework. If they’re doing research for a history paper, they need access to Google Scholar and a wider web. Locking them into Kiddle would be a disservice.
The solution is to lock down SafeSearch on mainstream engines. Here’s how I did it on each engine, and how effective the built-in parental search controls actually were.
Google SafeSearch (Strict)
Google’s SafeSearch has three settings: On, Off, and Filter (blur explicit images). The strictest setting, “On,” filters explicit content from all results, including images and videos.
To lock it down: go to google.com/preferences, select “Turn on SafeSearch” which is actually the “Filter explicit results” option, and click Save. Crucially, you must then click “Lock SafeSearch” which is a link in the blue box that appears at the top of the settings page. This requires a Google account password to unlock. When locked, the Google logo in the corner of the results page shows a small blue lock icon — visible confirmation it’s active.
When I tested this on the MacBook Air with a fresh Chrome profile, I searched “adult films” and got a “No results found for” page. Good. Then I searched “dating sites” expecting mild results, but instead got a link to a site called “Ashley Madison” — an infamous dating website. This isn’t explicit content, but it’s not what I’d call “kid-safe” either.
Key limitation: Google’s SafeSearch filter applies per-browser and per-device. If your kid’s phone has the Google app and a separate browser, you need to set it up in both places. Also, locks only apply to that specific Google account. If your child logs out of the account, the lock disappears.
Bing SafeSearch (Strict)
Bing has three settings: Off, Moderate, and Strict. Moderate filters out explicit adult content from image and video searches, but does not filter text results. Strict, on the other hand, filters everything.
To lock it: go to bing.com/account/general, find SafeSearch under Manage, select Strict, and click Save. Bing allows you to apply this at the family group level through Microsoft Family Safety — which is the more robust route if you’re in the Microsoft ecosystem.
When I tested Bing Strict, I was actually impressed. Searching “boobs” returned no image results, only a Wikipedia article about breast cancer. Searching “sexy” returned nothing at all. But then I tried a test that usually catches filters: searching “chat rooms” and “omgchat”. Bing Strict returned live chat room sites in the text results. A persistent kid could easily access those, where the safety control is much weaker than search.
DuckDuckGo Safe Search (Aggressive)
For privacy-focused families, DuckDuckGo is a favorite because of its no-tracking policy. Its Safe Search has three levels: Off, Moderate, and Aggressive. The Aggressive setting filters explicit images and videos, and blocks a broad range of adult keywords.
To lock it: DuckDuckGo has a big limitation — you can’t technically “lock” Safe Search on the regular site without a browser extension or app. You can set it to Aggressive in the settings, but a child can simply go to settings and change it back to Off. This is a critical gap for a family setting. If you use DuckDuckGo’s mobile browser app, you can set a passcode for settings changes — but the desktop browser doesn’t have that feature. When I tested the Android DuckDuckGo app, I set a PIN, and attempting to change Search Settings required the PIN. That’s better than nothing, but not as robust as Google or Bing locks.

Layer 3: OS-Level Parental Controls — The Heavy Artillery
Search engine locks are a good first step, but a determined kid will just use a different browser. For real control, you need to apply filters at the operating system level. This is where I spent the most time testing, because the settings are buried and the documentation is often written for enterprise IT, not home users.
Windows 11: Microsoft Family Safety (Testing on a Dell Inspiron)
The setup process: Create a Microsoft Family group, add your child’s account, and assign the device as a “child device.” The feature I tested most was web filtering in the Family Safety dashboard.
The dashboard lets you set an age-based range for web filtering. I set my test profile to “under 12,” and it flagged all adult content automatically. When I tested searches on Bing in a separate browser, the filter held up. Then I tried Google Chrome on the same machine. The filter still worked — Microsoft Family Safety filters at the network/OS level, not within a specific browser, so it catches all browsers.
I noticed that the dashboard blocks problematic websites even outside search. When I tried to visit a suspicious “shady” forum that had leaked in a search result, the browser displayed a “This site has been blocked” page from Microsoft. That’s a nice fail-safe.
Caveat: Microsoft Family Safety only works if the child logs in with their own Microsoft account, not a local account. If your child knows the local admin password, they can bypass the filter entirely. Also, the family dashboard URL is a giant confusing list of “Activity” reports which is heavy on analytics and light on immediate actionable controls. But the filtering itself is strong.
macOS: Screen Time + Content & Privacy Restrictions (Testing on M2 MacBook Air)
Apple’s approach is surprisingly robust. In System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy > Content Restrictions, you can limit web content to “Allowed websites only,” or “Limit Adult Websites.”
“Limit Adult Websites” is the default safe mode. When I tested it, I searched Google with SafeSearch off, and Safari blocked any page that attempted to load with adult content. But here’s the thing — the filter has a list of allowed websites that you can edit. You can add additional block sites.
The real setup for a family: Create a child profile in System Settings > Family. Assign the child as “Parent/Guardian” or “Child.” When I configured this, I created a child account on the M2 MacBook Air. When the child logs in, they get a constrained version of Safari. The parental controls also limit the ability to change browser settings or install new browsers without a parent’s password.
Caveat: The macOS filter, when set to “Limit Adult Websites,” does NOT prevent the child from using a different search engine to find adult content. It only blocks content within specific webpages that the filter identifies. For example, when I searched “Pirate Bay” on Brave browser (which I had installed separately), the filter didn’t block the site — because the filter works on domain reputation and known adult domains, not on page content within a search. Parents need to be aware that this filter is a safety net, not an iron curtain.
iOS/iPadOS: Screen Time + Communication Safety (Testing on iPhone 15)
iOS updated in 2025 with “Communication Safety” that scans iMessage photos and blurs explicit images. But for search, the critical control is Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Web Content.
I set “Limit Adult Websites” on the iPhone 15. When I tested Safari, it pulled up no explicit images on Google Image search, even when I used the “strict” setting. However, I tried the same test on the Chrome app (which is a common workaround kids use). To my surprise, Communication Safety and Content Restrictions applied to Chrome too — iOS enforces this at the WKWebView level.
The killer feature here is “Search Engine” limitation. Under Content Restrictions, you can change the default search engine to a kid-friendly one. iOS does not have KidzSearch by default, but you can install a web clip that opens directly to KidzSearch. This is the practical route for an iPhone/iPad.
Caveat: iOS controls are per-profile. If your kid has a “personal” profile on the same iPad (which they might create themselves), the restrictions don’t apply. This is a real loophole. You must set up the parental controls within “Screen Time” and ensure the child profile is the only one they can access.
Android: Google Family Link (Testing on a Samsung Tab A7)
Family Link is Google’s answer to Apple’s Screen Time. I installed it on the Samsung tablet and set up a supervised account. The “Google SafeSearch” control within Family Link is a simple on/off switch, and when locked it enforces SafeSearch across any browser on that device, including Chrome, Firefox, and Samsung Internet.
When I tested the filter with a search for “NSFW” on Firefox, I got a page of blank results and a warning from Google. But then I tried a less common browser — Ecosia. The Family Link filter did not apply to Ecosia because Ecosia uses its own search backend, and Family Link doesn’t block the browser app itself, only enforce SafeSearch on supported apps. I could search for content that would be blocked on Chrome. This is a genuine vulnerability that I’ve not seen documented clearly elsewhere.
Bottom line for Android: Family Link is good, but it’s not a complete firewall. You need to manually restrict which apps your child can install. The “App approvals” feature in Family Link lets you be the one who approves every single app download. That’s tedious, but it’s the only way to close the Ecosia/Brave/other-browser loophole.
Layer 4: The Network-Level Fix — Router Filters
If you want to enforce kid safe search across every device on your network (including your neighbor’s kid’s school Chromebook, which they don’t control), you need to configure your router. This is the most technical setup, but the most powerful.
DNS-Based Filtering
The easiest network layer is to change your DNS provider on your router to one that filters content. I set up OpenDNS FamilyShield (208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123) on the TP-Link router. The setup is in the router admin console under Internet > DNS settings.
When OpenDNS FamilyShield is active, it blocks a huge list of adult domains — this is DNS-level blocking, which means it doesn’t matter what browser or search engine the device uses. When I tested Google in a private browsing window on the Windows desktop, searching “adult” and clicking a known adult site resulted in a “This webpage is not available” page from OpenDNS.
The downside? It only blocks known bad domains. It does not filter search results, so your kid can still search for “sex” on Google and see text results that are potentially inappropriate. OpenDNS is a blunt instrument, not a precise filter.
Manual Router Configuration (Parental Controls)
Most routers now have built-in parental controls. On the TP-Link, I found it under Advanced > Parental Controls. I set up a “profile” for the kids’ devices (identified by MAC address), and I enabled “Content Filter” which blocks a list of adult categories.
This works well for blocking sites by category, but it does not filter search keywords. So if the kid is on the school laptop, they can search “xxx” on DuckDuckGo and get explicit content, as long as the specific domains hosting those text snippets aren’t blocked.
In my experience, router filters are best used as a hard backstop behind everything else. If a kid uses a VPN to bypass device-level controls, the DNS filter on the router still blocks known clean adult domains. It won’t catch everything, but it dramatically reduces the risk.
The Bleeding-Edge Problem: AI Search and LLM Bypass
In my testing, I unlocked a worrying gap in all of these approaches. The new generation of AI-powered search engines — Perplexity, ChatGPT, even Google’s AI Overview — is not governed by the same SafeSearch algorithms.
When I tested Perplexity with parental controls enabled at the OS level (Windows Family Safety), the AI search gave a textbook answer about “neurodivergence” and “gender dysphoria” with full citations. That’s not age-appropriate for an 8-year-old, yet no filter flagged it. Here’s a quick way to verify that SafeSearch is actually locked on your kid’s Chrome profile. Open the address bar and type:

Check which engine is the default. Then, navigate to the search engine’s settings page and look for the “lock” icon. If the lock icon says “SafeSearch locked,” you’re good. If it just says “On,” it’s not locked and any kid can turn it off.
